Frequently Asked Questions

How Loud Is A Home Generator?

The decibel range for the Generac Guardian Series is between 63-66 db. This is in the same range as an A/C unit. Generac is also some of the quietest units on the market.

Do I Need To Upgrade My Electrical Service, Meter, or Panel?

In many cases no additional update of service is needed. However, and especially in older homes, upgrading the panel is important to do. It’s important to note that if your home is newer, most of the time a panel upgrade isn’t necessary. Penco Electric is a full service electrical contractor that is licensed, bonded, and insured, and we can upgrade your panel if necessary. Our certified generator technicians that provide our estimates will take the time to explain the install process thoroughly. The tech will look at your panel, service and meter with you to make sure that you are fully informed and ready to make the right decision.

Where Can The Generator BE Located?

In general an automatic standby generator is placed in the back or rear of the exterior of your home. Much of the locating requirements are dictated by the municipality that your home resides. In comparison to other units on the market a Generac Guardian Series Automatic Standby Generator has a setback of 3 feet from the home, and not near a window. Generators are often placed neared the A/C units of the home. These generators can NOT be placed indoors as they have an exhaust.

What Can I Backup On My Home Generator?

The amount of your home that can be backed up by your Generac generator depends on the size you select. There are generators like the 17KW -20KW Guardian Series that can cover the whole house including the A/C units. The best way to determine the appropriate size for your need is to think about what you would like to have when the power goes out. Most people think of things like bathroom and bedroom lighting, heat, A/C, refrigeration and other appliances, and general rooms of lighting and power. It is important to think about those things that don’t first come to mind as well. These may be garage door openers, health and safety equipment (oxygen tanks, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors), pet needs (fish tanks), and more. But, the best way to determine the size of generator is to schedule a free estimate and walk through your home with a Penco Electric certified technician.
